About the Program

The SEED Indigenous FIFO Program is a culturally respectful, 10-day pre-employment initiative designed to prepare Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participants for long-term careers in the FIFO utilities sector. Delivered in partnership with IronMerge, the program blends accredited industry training with personal development, cultural mentoring, and FIFO readiness.

Pathway Into FIFO Utilities

The program provides entry-level preparation for the “utility” role, a broad position that covers multiple functions across mine sites in Western Australia. Utility work can include:

  • Housekeeping and cleaning
  • Kitchen and dining assistance
  • Grounds and maintenance (DL required)
  • Administration and reception
  • Bar, retail, or barista service

Program Structure

  • Days 1–2 (Non-Accredited Modules): FIFO lifestyle orientation, medicals, camp life, rosters, fatigue management, plus personal development in resilience, confidence, time management, goal setting, wellbeing, money management, and cultural awareness.
  • Days 3–10 (Accredited Training): Industry-recognised certifications delivered by Skill Hire RTO 0361, including:
    • RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol)
    • Food Safety
    • White Card (Construction Safety)
    • Work Safely at Heights
    • Confined Space Entry
    • Gas Testing Atmospheres
    • Elevated Work Platform (under 11m)
    • Forklift Licence or Barista Training

Candidate Requirements
Participants in the SEED Program are expected to:

  • Commit to a FIFO roster of 2 weeks on, 1 week off
  • Provide a recent police clearance (within 6 months)
  • Be physically capable of performing demanding work (up to 12 hours per day)
  • Undergo regular drug and alcohol testing
  • Attend the full program and complete all required training and tickets

Support and Mentoring

To ensure a smooth transition into FIFO life, the program includes:

  • Comprehensive onboarding and mentoring
  • “Buddy system” support on site during the first swings
  • Mobilisation in groups for familiar faces and peer support
  • Cultural engagement initiatives and ongoing career pathway planning

Employer Partnership
IronMerge, the employer partner for this program, commits to placing graduates into FIFO hospitality and utility roles. With structured on-the-job training, role rotation opportunities, and full mentoring support, participants enter the workforce with confidence and long-term prospects.
